Steelwork order for an Academy for Bulwell Nottinghamshire

Caunton has won its first Academy contract, and will mean over 800te of fabrication for the works. What’s more it is for a new local establishment, The Bulwell Academy. We have been very busy over the past four years building the frameworks for so many schools – Sheffield, Derby, Doncaster, Oldham, Northampton, to name but a few of them, but this is the first academy. What is the difference? An academy is for 11-19 year olds and is a publicly funded, all ability, independent school established by sponsors working in partnership with the Government and local councils, and academies provide a free education for every pupil. In the Bulwell case, the local council is Nottingham City and sponsored by the Education foundation Edge with Carillion as main contractor. The £26 million academy will replace Bulwell’s two comprehensive schools, River Leen in Hucknall Lane and Henry Mellish in Highbury Road. It is being built on the site of the River Leen School, part of which is already being dismantled. The sod cutting ceremony was only carried out last month, so Caunton were quick off the mark.

The Bulwell Academy, which is due to open in September next year, is one of three planned for Nottingham, as well as eight new schools. The project is part of proposals to build 21st century schools in Nottingham under the £90 million Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.
