Caunton exports steelwork to Jamaica

Caunton are playing an integral part in a programme in Jamaica to improve the supply of water. This project will help to improve the efficiency, quality and sustainability of the potable water services provided by the Kingston Metropolitan Area (KMA) and increase access to water in selected urban centres of Jamaica.( The Kingston Metropolitan Area is the major urban area on the southern side of the island, with over one million people or nearly 40% of the population of Jamaica).

The particular projects involved are, after the removal of the existing concrete beams over two reservoirs at Montgomery Corner, the replacement of the cover with a galvanised structural steel frame and concrete roof slab. Caunton have supplied steelwork for these two reservoirs with a total tonnage 150T (75T each) . In addition, the supply of 3310m2 metal decking (1655m2 each), to contain and support an in-situ concrete slab as permanent shuttering. The steelwork and the decking are fully galvanised. One can see erection of the beams in progress in the photograph. Caunton’s client in this case is Kier Construction. The steelwork and decking were delivered by container – loaded at Caunton’s Moorgreen Works and the erection is by local labour.

Some 26 water projects are slated for implementation by Rural Water Supply Limited (RWSL) over the next three years, at a cost of approximately $4 billion. Caunton wishes RWSL every success with such a worthwhile exercise.
