Supplying Steelwork for Global Giant Magna International Inc.

Caunton are pleased to be supplying the steelwork for a new foundry building for global giant Magna International Inc. McLaren Construction are the main contractor for this new world-class aluminum casting facility in Telford .

The building is a twin span portal frame with lean-to sides, containing an area 204m by 84m. The overall plan area of the building including an attached shipping area is 225.000 sq. feet, and requires over 1300te of structural steelwork. The steelwork is being designed by Caunton’s Technical Team. Due to the fatigue actions induced by the large gantry cranes, elements of the steel structure had to be specified as Execution Class 3 (EXC3) for CE Marking purposes. This places much more stringent requirements on the fabrication and welding processes.

Once production begins in 2018, the facility will use Magna's innovative high-pressure vacuum die casting process to produce a number of advanced lightweight aluminum castings– a key building block in the next generation all-aluminum and multi-material vehicle architectures. By using these types of castings, Magna helps automakers deliver maximum strength and stiffness and minimum weight, ultimately achieving better fuel economy, safety and handling.

Caunton are delighted to be playing a part in this project, and helping albeit in a small way to maintain and develop the enormous success of owner Tata with world-beating Jaguar Land Rover. Prime Minister Theresa May has recently outlined an industrial strategy aimed at boosting some of the country's leading sectors. it seems that with this foundry, Caunton are benefiting from the anticipation of a post-Brexit need for more indigenous British manufacture.
