New Data Centre erected inside existing portal framed building

Caunton Engineering were very pleased to have been awarded the contract for the structural steelwork for a new Data Centre located in the North West by a Tier One Contractor. The unusual challenge with this particular contract was to erect the approximately 800te of steelwork inside an existing portal frame building. The Data Centre steelwork comprises a two storey structure 143m long by 43 meters wide. Caunton supplied composite metal decking flooring to both storeys. The structure’s top level results in a concrete roof which sits approx. 300-400mm below the existing building’s eaves and valley levels. The steelwork frame is protected with an intumescent paint finish. Caunton’s Secondary Steelwork Division is supplying steel access staircases and a temporary loading gantry. The steelwork was designed by consulting engineer Arup with the connections, which included the movement joints, designed by the Caunton technical team.
