Caunton sponsors the 2021 University of Nottingham "Engineering Excellence and Innovation Award"

Caunton Engineering is a company that recognizes and values engineering excellence and innovation, and are therefore very pleased to be sponsoring the 2021, University of Nottingham, ‘Engineering Excellence and Innovation Award’.

Nottingham University’s M. Eng. in Civil Engineering course includes a major design exercise in the fourth year of the students’ studies. This year the project is to design a demountable tennis stadium, and the students are required to act as the consulting engineer. Caunton Engineering have been much involved, giving initial advice, by way of a lecture to the students jointly by Managing Director Matthew Shimwell (pictured) and Caunton’s senior chartered engineer Gavin Christie, on practical considerations of steelwork design. Caunton senior staff then meet each group to discuss their projects and offer advice.
For the full specification of the project please see below:

A very exciting project and Caunton is delighted to be involved. The exercise is programmed to be judged just before Christmas 2021, when Caunton will be presenting a prize for the winning entry.

Following a successful Olympic bid, a brand new tennis court is to be provided, seating 10,000 spectators. Whilst the functional requirements for the seating arrangements are orthodox, there are no constraints on the form of the roof structure and overall aesthetics of the facility. For an Olympic facility, a landmark structure is demanded. The client is undecided if the roof should be open over the court, or have a movable roof so that it can be fully closed in bad weather. The consultant is expected to recommend one alternative, explaining the reasons behind the recommendation. After the competition is concluded, the facilities will be dismantled, and re- erected elsewhere. The construction and de-construction methods should be considered.
