Caunton supplied and erected the steelwork and metal decking for a large contract by the major Scottish contractor, McLaughlin and Harvey. The overall project is for a massive new £114 million base for United Parcel Service (UPS), the American multinational package delivery and supply chain management company. This will be an airport gateway logistics centre located at East Midlands airport, which is currently UK’s busiest pure cargo airport. Over 300,000 tonnes of flown cargo is handled there per annum. The airport hopes to triple freight shipments to one million tonnes a year within the next 10 to 20 years. The site itself has an area of 28.5 acres and is situated between the East Midlands airport and the M1 motorway.

The steelwork is required for two buildings on the site. The main building itself is 450,000 sq. feet in plan area, and is a multi-span portal frame requiring over 3000te of structural steelwork and designed by architect and engineer Aecom. In addition there is a smaller office building of overall floor area 28,000sq ft. The steelwork connections were designed by the Caunton technical team.
