Caunton constructed and erected the steelwork for the Da Vinci Community College at Breadsall near Derby. This is part of Derby’s largest ever schools building project. The contract for £37.1m was placed with Norwest Holst earlier in the year. Construction is programmed such that the college will be open for the 2006 autumn term.
The steelwork consists of a basic two storey beam and column structure for class rooms, cafeteria & viewing gallery, with an adjoining portal frame as framing for a sports hall & changing facilities. The steelwork comprises a 300te beam, column and portal construction (mixed frame). The design incorporates composite construction – through deck stud welding and steel decking – plus steel staircases for ready access and utilised during erection. The footprint of the building is 3500sq metres with an overall floor area of 6800sq.
