Caunton Engineering contributed to the construction of EDF Energy’s Hinkley Point C nuclear power station in Somerset in 2017, providing the structural steelwork for the factory building at Bristol Port, Avonmouth, used to manufacture precast concrete tunnel segments.

It has now been reported that Sizewell C nuclear power station in Suffolk has received planning approval to manufacture tunnel components for the new power station at the same facility.

The steel frame for the building was designed, manufactured and erected by Caunton Engineering. Standing 14.5m high, 36m wide and 150m long, the building incorporates almost 500 tonnes of structural steelwork. Caunton’s scope also included the cladding and doors, with the steelwork designed to EC3 requirements to accommodate the crane loadings.

The continued use of the existing facility represents a positive and sustainable outcome, making use of infrastructure originally constructed to support Hinkley Point C for another major UK nuclear energy project.
