Caunton Engineering was appointed by main contractor Bowmer and Kirkland to fabricate, supply and erect the structural steelwork for Indurent Park, Chippenham. The project comprised five new warehouse units within the established 78-acre logistics park, strengthening the region’s provision of high-quality distribution space.
The development includes four twin-span warehouses and one single- span unit, all steel framed to achieve long clear spans and flexible internal layouts. The largest buildings incorporate dock-level and level access loading. Sustainability was central to the design with the scheme targeting BREEAM ‘Excellent’ and EPC A+, supported by photovoltaic panels to reduce operational carbon.
Steel erection was completed over a 12-week programme, beginning with the largest unit, which reaches 12.5m to haunch and features two 42m-wide spans formed using spliced rafters. Units were erected sequentially using a single erection gang, MEWPs and mobile cranes, with early installation of office areas.
Despite increasingly constrained site conditions as buildings were completed, Caunton successfully adapted its erection methodology to maintain programme certainty. The final structure, a single-span warehouse incorporating a single-storey office. The steelwork package was delivered in line with the overall construction schedule.
